How to Apply Makeup for a Natural Look

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Here you can read all about how to apply makeup so you look naturally beautiful!

Steps

  1. Clean: Make sure your face is clean of any previous makeup. In general you don't want to over wash your face because that can dry it out. Just take a cotton ball and put either makeup remover or water and just dab or rub in small circles to remove old makeup.
  2. Moisturize: Using about the same amount of lotion that you would toothpaste on your toothbrush, gently rub in an unscented, oil free lotion. The reason you don't want anything with fragrance or oil is because those can clog your pores causing acne.
  3. Foundation: The most important thing about foundation is that you find your right color. Get in a natural light and test the foundation to make sure it's the right color for your skin. When applying foundation, you don't want to overload on it. That is one of the main reasons for looking unnatural. I suggest taking a cotton swab and dotting the spots on your face with foundation that need it. Most common places are under the eyes, side of nose, chin, forehead... Then taking your finger or a sponge dab in the foundation, blending it untill it looks like your skin tone. If you have bags or discoloration under your eyes, take the cotton swab and make 3 dots on the line of the circles under your eyes. Take your finger and dab it in gently. After you have applied the foundation make sure you blend! Blending is key to a natural look.
  4. Liner: If you feel that you need eyeliner apply it only to the top of your eye and smudge. If you have fair/light skin or have lighter hair then I suggest a brown eyeliner versus a black. A dark green, a darker purple, chestnut, and brown are all common alternatives to black liner. One of my favorite trick is to use white eyeliner. You're probably thinking "white eyeliner? I'll look crazy!" right? Well if you apply it right it can open your eyes and make you look more awake! Take a creamy white liner and line the tops of your eyes lightly. Then taking a cotton swab your finger or something else, smudge the liner so it looks blended.
  5. Lashes: Curling your lashes is a great way to open your eyes without make up. After you have curled your lashes you may decide if you need mascara or not. As before with liner, if you are fair then black mascara may be too harsh on your face. A brown or brownish-black will fit your face better. When you take the mascara out of the tube and see that clump of mascara on the brush, do you wipe it on the inside of the tube? Don't!! Take some triplet paper or a tissue and simply wipe of the extra clumps. If you wipe it in the tube then that only causes more clumps. Take the wand and start applying the mascara to the inside of the top lashes, brushing outwards. The apply to the outter lashes, brushing inwards. Finally, apply from the root of lashes to the top, zig-zaging the brush slightly to avoid clumps. If you see that your lashes are clumping together then rather than trying to fix it with the wand, take one of those eyelash brushes and sweep it through your lashes.
  6. Bronzer: Bronzer is a great way to make it look like you have a natural glow. Look in the images I have attached about the bronzer and apply it in the shape of a W as it explains.
  7. Blush: Cream blush works better than powder because it gives you a dewey look and lasts but either is fine. Make sure you have a natural colored blush. Fiery reds and bright pink can look fake. If you are using cream blush, rub a little on two fingers and then pat your fingers on the back of your hand to remove excess blush. Dab the creme on your check bones slightly, not very much blush is ever needed. continue dabbing until it is a smooth colour. If you are using powder, take an angled brush and swipe it through the power, then tap it on the side of the container to remove access blush. Pat the blush on your cheek bones lighly, and then brush upwards in small strokes until it is all blended.
  8. Lips: Take a damp washcloth and rub it gently on your lips to remove dead skin and make your lips look fresh.
    • Put on lip balm.
    • Apply a lip color that is the same color as your natural lip. I would suggest not using lip gloss because it can rub off quickly, dry your lips, your hair get caught in it, and it provides no lasting color. You really don't need any lip liner for a quick natural daily look. However if you just have to, use one that is your natural color and blend!

  9. Get ready and then relax! Constantly checking a mirror, and fussing over your face can ruin a day. Smile, and have confidence.

Tips

  • A liquid foundation is best versus a powder one.
  • To make your lashes stay curled longer, take a blow drier and blow it on the eyelash curler for 3 or 4 seconds. Then tap the curler on your hand to make sure it's not too hot and curl your lashes.
  • Drinking plenty of water helps with a natural glow.
  • If you take a quick walk in the morning you may decide after looking in the mirror, you don't even need make up.
  • No-nos: Putting highlighter under your eyebrows, applying blush in the hollows of your cheeks, mascara on your bottom lashes, noticeable lip liner. All of these give you an unnatural look.
  • Mineral makeup is popular now. Using a mineral finish powder can even out your skin tone and look great if you are in a rush or don't want to use foundation.

Warnings

  • Make sure you are careful with the eyelash curler.
