How to Resist the Temptation of Makeup

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Makeup is all over the place these days. Nobody would dare appear on a magazine cover or television program without layers of the stuff. Still, more and more people are going without it, and you can, too. Here is how you can be yourself, and make up your mind instead of your face.

Steps

  1. Examine your own reasons for not wearing makeup. Reasons that are personal to you will be more important than anything this article can suggest. Does it go against your personal beliefs? How?
  2. Don't buy makeup in the first place. One look at the price tags should make this an easy thing to do. Many tubes and bottles of makeup cost upwards of $15 for an ounce or two of colored goo. According to Paco Underhill, "The cost of a lipstick and its packaging is around a dollar or so. The rest is marketing, distribution and a whole lot of profit." Besides, not buying makeup means less time spent next to the smelly perfume counters with cosmetics salespeople fiddling with your face.
  3. Care for your skin and appearance. Comb your hair and keep it cut in a style you like. Trim and file your nails. Make it a daily routine to wash your face and apply a moisturizing lotion before venturing out, especially one with a daily sunblock. Use a colorless lip balm if the air is dry. Brush your teeth regularly. This is all just good grooming.
  4. Exercise. Besides being good for your health and your figure, it will help keep your skin clear, and give you a natural glow otherwise known as confidence.
  5. Enjoy the clean feeling of bare skin. Appreciate that you don't have to worry about lipstick smears on cups or clothing.
  6. Enjoy the free time or extra sleep you gain by not spending an hour every morning primping and preening before leaving home.
  7. Enjoy the free space in your bathroom and suitcase, the space not occupied by a jumble of bottles and brushes and tubes.
  8. Be proud to show the world that eyelids aren't really dark blue and lips aren't really bright red. Plain skin is honest and real. There's nothing wrong with that.
  9. Broaden your definition of beauty for yourself and others. People can be beautiful without looking exactly like the unnaturally skinny models who have been done up by professional makeup artists and then digitally post-processed.
  10. Notice that people who wear makeup spend a lot of money, time, and effort to look "natural". The easier way to look natural is to be natural.
  11. Dress in a style that suits you and expresses your tastes. Wear your favorite colors, styles and accessories, whether or not they're the in thing this year.
  12. Express yourself in other ways. Paint, sing, dance, write, talk, or do what you like. You'll communicate far more than by painting your face.
  13. Be yourself. You are far more than a layer of powder and paint. Let the real you shine through.
  14. Smile, have good posture, and be confident. You will improve your appearance instantly, no makeup involved.

Tips

  • There are times you might want to make exceptions. Decide in advance how you would like to handle them. A makeup-free clown or mime on Halloween would look pretty silly. Some dramatic productions require makeup, either for the character or because of stage lights and distance to the audience. You may also want to make exceptions for dressy occasions. Whatever you choose to do in these situations, make it a conscious, personal choice.
  • Be proud of thinking for yourself and having the courage to go against the crowd.
